Rates start at Ofgem’s North Western England price cap for 1 October 2026 to 31 December 2026: Direct Debit, single-rate electricity, VAT included (0% on electricity during the temporary VAT cut, 5% on gas). Usage starts at Ofgem’s typical household figures. Replace both with VAT-inclusive numbers from your bill.

How it works

For each fuel: annual usage × unit rate, plus 365 × the daily standing charge. The electricity and gas results are added for a dual-fuel total, and the monthly figure is that total divided by 12.

The starting rates are Ofgem’s regional cap benchmarks for a Direct Debit default tariff with single-rate electricity, covering a fixed period (1 October 2026 to 31 December 2026). They include VAT. The cap changes every quarter, so a full-year estimate assumes today’s rates continue.

Fees, discounts, debt repayments and time-of-use rates are not included. Read how we derive the cap rates →

Questions

Is this a quote for my home?

No. It multiplies your usage by a unit rate and adds a daily standing charge for 365 days. The starting rates are Ofgem’s regional price-cap benchmark for a Direct Debit default tariff; your own supplier, tariff, payment method and meter type can give a different bill.

What VAT is included?

The starting rates include VAT at 0% on household electricity and 5% on gas, as in Ofgem’s cap figures for 1 October 2026 to 31 December 2026. If your bill shows a different VAT rate, enter the VAT-inclusive rates from your bill instead.

Where do I find my annual usage?

Your annual statement, and often each bill, shows estimated annual consumption in kWh for each fuel. A smart meter app or your supplier account may also show it. Without your own figure, the calculator starts from Ofgem’s typical household usage.

Will the monthly figure match my Direct Debit?

Not necessarily. The calculator divides the annual cost by 12. Suppliers set Direct Debits from their own usage estimates and may adjust for a credit or debit balance.

What does the price-cap comparison show?

When you change a unit rate or standing charge, the calculator also costs your same usage at your region’s cap rates, so you can see how your tariff compares with the default-tariff benchmark for this period.
