What’s available

Each dataset is the same one shown on our price pages. Benchmarks are dated snapshots from official sources, not quotes or live tariffs.

Licence and attribution

Our compilation of these figures is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). You can copy, adapt and republish it, commercially or not, as long as you credit UtilityPrices with a link. The licences of the original sources also apply:

  • Ofgem, DESNZ and GOV.UK (HMRC): Crown copyright under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Include the statement “Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.”
  • Live grid mix: National Energy System Operator (NESO) Carbon Intensity API, licensed under CC BY 4.0 and its terms of use. Credit the Carbon Intensity API. NESO’s terms do not allow selling access to the data or presenting a product as a replacement for the API.

Credits must not suggest that Ofgem, DESNZ, NESO or UtilityPrices endorse your work. Copy the credit for the data you use:

Every API response includes the right credit for that dataset in attribution.text and attribution.html, and each CSV has source_url and licence columns.

Quick start

No key or headers are needed. Responses are pretty-printed JSON, so you can also open any endpoint in a browser.

Command line

curl https://utilityprices.co.uk/api/v1/price-cap/regions/london

JavaScript (browser or Node.js 18+)

const res = await fetch('https://utilityprices.co.uk/api/v1/price-cap')
const cap = await res.json()
console.log(cap.data.headline.typicalAnnualBillGbp, cap.period, cap.attribution.text)

Fair use and caching

  • Cache what you fetch. Price data changes at most once a quarter. Responses say so in Cache-Control (an hour in browsers, a day at our CDN); the live grid mix is cached for one to two minutes.
  • Keep it gentle. A few requests a minute per app is plenty. Fetch once on your server and share the result rather than calling the API from every visitor’s browser in a busy app. We may block traffic that degrades the service for others.
  • Check the period. Use period and retrievedAt to show your readers how current a figure is. Price cap figures are replaced when Ofgem announces a new cap.
  • No guarantee. The data is provided as is, without warranty. It is not advice or a quote. If a source is unavailable we return an error rather than an estimate.

Who it’s for

  • Journalists and bloggers: regional price cap tables and typical bills for a story, with the source and period to quote.
  • Teachers and students: real CSV data for spreadsheet lessons on unit rates, standing charges and the energy mix.
  • Councils, housing associations and charities: local rates for cost-of-living guidance and an embeddable card for your website.
  • Developers: a CORS-enabled JSON API with an OpenAPI 3.1 description.

What isn’t included

Water bills are not in the API or downloads: Water UK’s website terms reserve its data and allow only limited non-commercial extracts, and we have not found an open licence for Scottish Water’s charges. The Northern Ireland grid, weather and gas-flow layers of our live map are also not republished. Read the figures on our water bills page and the methodology.

Versioning and changelog

The API is versioned in its path. We may add fields and endpoints to v1 at any time; we will not remove or rename fields in v1. A breaking change would ship under a new path, such as /api/v2, and be announced here.

  • 1.0.0 (11 October 2026): First release: price cap, regional rates, electricity VAT relief, business prices and the live GB electricity mix, plus CSV downloads and embeddable widgets.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an API key or an account?

No. The API, CSV files and widgets are free and open. There is no sign-up, key or cookie, and the API accepts requests from any website (CORS is open).

Can I use the data commercially?

Yes. Our compilation is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), which allows commercial use. The Ofgem, DESNZ and GOV.UK figures underneath are Crown copyright under the Open Government Licence v3.0, and the live grid data comes from NESO under CC BY 4.0 and its terms of use. Credit both, as shown below.

How do I credit UtilityPrices?

Show “Data: UtilityPrices” with a link to the page the figures come from, for example https://utilityprices.co.uk/energy-price-cap, plus the source statement included in every response. Each API response has a ready-made attribution.text and attribution.html.

How often does the data change?

Price cap figures change quarterly when Ofgem announces a new cap, business prices change with each quarterly DESNZ release, and the grid mix changes every half hour. Every response states its period and when we retrieved it.

Why is there no water data?

Water UK’s and Scottish Water’s website terms do not allow their figures to be republished as a dataset, so the API and downloads leave them out. You can still read and link to our water bills page.
