JSON API reference

A free, read-only JSON API for UK energy price benchmarks and the live GB electricity mix. No key, no sign-up, CORS open to every website.

Basics

Base URL: https://utilityprices.co.uk/api/v1. HTTPS only.
Methods: GET (and HEAD). Other methods return 405.
Authentication: none. Please credit UtilityPrices with a link; see licence and attribution.
Format: UTF-8 JSON, pretty-printed. Numbers are numbers; dates are YYYY-MM-DD or ISO 8601 timestamps.
CORS: every response sends Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *, so you can call the API from browser JavaScript on any site. Preflight OPTIONS requests are answered.
Caching: price datasets send Cache-Control: public, max-age=3600, s-maxage=86400, stale-while-revalidate=86400; the live grid sends public, max-age=60, s-maxage=120, stale-while-revalidate=60. Please cache on your side too.
Machine-readable spec: OpenAPI 3.1 JSON. GET /api/v1 lists every endpoint, download and widget.

Response format

Every successful response has the same envelope, so period, units, VAT basis, sources and licence always travel with the figures.

Field	Type	Meaning
`apiVersion`	string	Major API version, "1".
`dataset`	string	Dataset id, matching the anchors on this page.
`title, description`	string	What the dataset contains.
`period`	object	effectiveFrom and effectiveTo (YYYY-MM-DD) for dated benchmarks, with a readable label; from and to (ISO 8601, UTC) for the live grid half hour.
`units`	object	Units for each kind of number in data, for example "pence per kWh".
`vatBasis`	string	Whether figures include VAT, and at what rate.
`data`	object	The figures. Field names carry units (…PencePerKwh, …Gbp, …Percent).
`notes`	string[]	Caveats you should keep with the figures.
`source`	object[]	Original documents: title, url and publisher.
`retrievedAt`	string	When we last took the figures from the source (date, or ISO 8601 timestamp for live data).
`updates`	string	How often the dataset changes.
`attribution`	object	Ready-made credit: text, html and the url to link to.
`licence`	object	Our licence (CC BY 4.0) and each upstream source’s licence and required statement.
`links`	object	self, page (the human-readable page), docs and csv where one exists.

Returns 503 upstream_unavailable if the NESO feed is down. data.status is stale when the latest half hour ended more than 90 minutes ago; data.carbonIntensity is null when no recent reading exists. For history, forecasts and regional intensity use the Carbon Intensity API directly.

Errors

Errors use the matching HTTP status and one JSON shape. Check error.code rather than the message text.

**Error codes**
Status	Code	When
400	`invalid_parameter`	A query parameter has an unsupported value, for example fuel=coal.
404	`not_found`	No endpoint at that path.
404	`region_not_found`	The region slug is not one of the 14 price-cap regions.
405	`method_not_allowed`	Anything other than GET, HEAD or OPTIONS. The API is read-only.
503	`upstream_unavailable`	The live grid source is unavailable. We never substitute estimated readings.

Versioning and changelog

The version is part of the path. We may add fields and endpoints to v1; we will not remove or rename fields in v1. A breaking change would use a new path such as /api/v2 and be announced on this page.
