APPLIANCE RUNNING COSTS · OCT–DEC 2026
How much does a coffee machine cost to run?
A bean-to-cup machine draws around 1.5 kW while it heats water, but only for a few minutes for each drink. At the GB average price-cap electricity rate of 26.32p per kWh for October–December 2026, a coffee machine costs about 38p an hour at full power, or 1.9p for a typical 3-minute drink.

How much electricity it uses
- The De’Longhi Magnifica S (ECAM22.110.B) bean-to-cup machine is rated at 1,450 W.
- The Household Electricity Survey (2010–11) measured coffee machines at an average of 31.8 kWh a year in the homes that had one.
| Example | Rated power | Per hour | Per drink | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical | 1,450 W | 38p | 1.9p | £14 |
Usage assumption: Two drinks a day, each with about three minutes of heating at full power. This is our illustration, not a measured average; change it in the calculator.
What drives the cost
- The number of drinks and milk frothing.
- Leaving it switched on between drinks, if it keeps its boiler hot.
How it compares
| Appliance | Typical use | Energy | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee machine (bean-to-cup) | 1 drink, 3 minutes | 0.07 kWh | 1.9p |
| Kettle | 1 boil, 2 minutes | 0.10 kWh | 2.6p |
| Microwave | 1 use, 5 minutes | 0.11 kWh | 2.8p |
Ways to spend less
- Switching the machine off at the wall when you are not using it avoids standby use. The Energy Saving Trust estimates turning appliances off standby saves about £45 a year in Great Britain across a typical home.

About these figures
Running costs are energy used × unit rate. They exclude the daily standing charge, which you pay whether or not the appliance runs. Costs per hour assume the appliance draws its full rated power the whole time; many appliances cycle on and off, so real use is often lower. Power ratings and energy figures are examples from the sources below, not a measured UK average.
